Thousands of displaced Lebanese sheltering in schools in southern Lebanon are suffering from a severe shortage of humanitarian aid. This comes after a significant decline in the work of relief organizations and associations following the signing of a US-brokered “framework agreement” between Lebanon and Israel on June 26, 2016. The agreement stipulates that both sides intend to end their conflict and address its root causes.

Field reports reveal that the displaced are living in dire conditions, lacking clean drinking water and experiencing shortages of food and medicine, amidst official neglect and escalating pleas for help.

According to a report broadcast on Al Jazeera Mubasher, the schools in the Omar Al-Fakhoury complex in southern Lebanon have become shelters for hundreds of families whose homes were destroyed in the border areas with Israel.

Relief coordinators confirm that the numbers have not decreased despite the cessation of hostilities. All the displaced have lost their homes entirely and have no option but to remain in the schools, awaiting a fateful decision regarding their future.

Around 90% of relief associations and organizations suspended their activities after the ceasefire, claiming that schools had been evacuated, which is strongly denied by the displaced people.

The report reveals that displaced people are currently relying on limited individual efforts to secure their basic needs, especially drinking water, which has become almost nonexistent after distribution companies ceased supplying it.

The report highlights the suffering of displaced people in securing their daily needs, as they depend on a water well inside the Omar Al-Fakhoury complex, which suffers from frequent breakdowns. They are forced to call on firefighters to bring water to the upper floors.

Testimonies from displaced people also confirm the complete lack of basic children’s necessities such as milk, diapers, and cleaning supplies, which were previously provided by organizations like UNICEF.

Families also warn that the lack of hygiene and sanitation in schools, coupled with poor sanitation facilities, exposes children to serious illnesses, especially since some children are still infants and require continuous medical care.

Israel has been waging an aggression against Lebanon since March 2, resulting in the death of 4,322 people and the injury of 12,203 others, in addition to the displacement of more than one million people, according to the latest statistics from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
