For years, the poultry sector in Gaza has been a cornerstone of the agricultural economy, contributing significantly to the supply of poultry and eggs to the local market, as well as providing thousands of direct and indirect jobs, thus bolstering its role in supporting food security. The Israeli war of attrition destroyed most of the sector’s infrastructure, from hatcheries and production farms to feed mills and other facilities, and even marketing and distribution networks.

With the cessation of local production, the prices of imported poultry skyrocketed to unprecedented levels. Luay Rajab, Director of Public Relations and Media at the Ministry of Agriculture in Gaza, confirms that the poultry sector was among the hardest hit agricultural sectors during the war, with approximately 2,400 farms affected, most suffering severe damage, some even complete destruction. Rajab told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, “Losses from closed broiler farms reached $10.8 million after their complete destruction, while open farms recorded losses of $11.6 million with a 95% damage rate.”

He points out that egg-laying chicken and turkey farms also suffered damage exceeding 86%, while breeder farms were completely destroyed, bringing the total losses in the poultry sector to approximately $30.7 million. This has directly impacted the decline in local production and the rise in prices. He explains that before the war, the sector was one of the most important components of livestock production in Gaza, with its production in 2022 reaching approximately 50,000 tons of white meat and 15,000 tons of table eggs, contributing significantly to meeting the needs of the local market.

Omar Hamouda, a poultry farmer in northern Gaza, says that his farm, located east of the Jabalia refugee camp, was completely destroyed, resulting in losses exceeding $90,000, as it was his primary source of income. Hamouda explains to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the farm used to produce quantities of broiler chickens that were sold in local markets at reasonable prices and contributed to meeting the needs of Gazans, but production ceased entirely after its destruction.

Hamouda points out that the lack of support, the closure of crossings, and the continued restrictions on production inputs prevent any opportunity to restart farms at the present time, which is reflected in food security and the rise in poultry prices in the markets.

Al-Shawa points out that the repercussions of this collapse were not limited to losses for poultry farmers but extended to food security. Malnutrition rates rose, and the need to import frozen poultry increased, while the price of a kilogram of imported chicken jumped to about 35 shekels, compared to 10 shekels before the war. He believes that rehabilitating the sector requires a comprehensive program that begins with restarting hatcheries, rebuilding farms and feed mills, and ensuring the supply of fertilized eggs, feed, and veterinary medicines. This program should also support veterinary services, which employ about 80 veterinarians in 35 clinics, thus ensuring a gradual return to production.
