Settler attacks in the West Bank are no longer isolated incidents that end when the attack is over. The results from last August show a much broader pattern, where attacks on Palestinians and their property are mixed with land confiscations, home takeovers, and expansion of settlement outposts. The Palestine Information Center ‘Ma’ta’ documented 1,223 crimes related to settlements in just one month.
This number means an average of about 39 crimes a day, in one of the clearest examples of escalation in terms of both the variety of settlement methods and its geographic spread.
The report details show that 721 attacks were carried out by settlers during the month, targeting citizens, farmers, herders, and their property. These attacks ranged from shooting and threats to abuse, crop destruction, and tree burning.
But the other side of the escalation was on land and homes. ‘Ma’ta’ recorded 299 cases of property confiscation and 49 cases of home takeovers in incidents that didn’t just leave material losses but also forced owners to face the risk of losing their land or homes and leaving the area.
At the same time, the center documented 154 settlement activities during August, including expanding outposts and establishing new infrastructure, reflecting the continued effort to consolidate and develop the settlement presence alongside field attacks. These numbers are significant because these trends are happening simultaneously. The situation is not about isolated attacks; it’s a continuous pressure on Palestinians matched by an expansion of settlement presence. While a farmer faces an attack or loses access to his land, construction or expansion of a settlement outpost appears in the same area. The danger of this pattern is especially clear in areas with increasing settlement activity, where attacks become a means to pressure the population, while expansion and infrastructure efforts give settlements and outposts greater ability to persist and grow. In this context, the figure 1,223 doesn’t seem like just a monthly total, but rather a picture of a process where different tools are used to achieve a single outcome—changing the reality on the ground. Property confiscation and home takeovers shrink the Palestinian presence, while settlement activities expand and solidify the opposing presence.
