Civil defense teams in the Gaza Strip recovered the bodies and remains of 55 martyrs from under the rubble of a house belonging to the Malaka family in the Zeitoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City. The house had been bombed by Israel about two years ago while sheltering dozens of displaced people.
Colonel Mohammed Abu Dan, supervisor of the martyrs’ remains recovery project, said that rescue teams continued their search and recovery operations for the third consecutive day, aiming to reach more than 60 missing persons believed to have perished inside the building.
Abu Dan explained that the teams were able to recover most of the bodies, in preparation for a unified funeral procession early next week.
He noted that the civil defense teams are facing significant difficulties in the recovery operations due to a severe shortage of equipment and heavy machinery. He called on international humanitarian organizations and institutions to intervene urgently and provide the department with modern equipment, suction trucks, and bulldozers necessary to recover the thousands of bodies trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings throughout the Gaza Strip.
Civil Defense Begins New Phase of Recovering Bodies of Martyrs from “Engineers’ Tower” in Nuseirat
The Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip announced on Saturday the start of a new phase in the operation to recover the bodies of martyrs trapped under the rubble of the “Engineers’ Tower” in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, nearly three years after its destruction by an Israeli airstrike.
During a press conference held at the site of the tower’s ruins, the Civil Defense stated that its teams are continuing to remove debris and recover the bodies of dozens of martyrs still buried beneath the rubble. This is part of the second phase of the victim recovery project, which began in Gaza City in early July and has now moved to the central governorate.
The Civil Defense explained that the mission faces significant challenges due to limited resources and the massive amount of rubble. They emphasized that recovering the bodies is a humanitarian and moral duty, allowing families to reach their loved ones and bury them with dignity.
The Civil Defense spokesman explained that the “Engineers Tower” consisted of six floors containing 24 apartments, and was housing more than 300 citizens when it was targeted, noting that about 150 martyrs were recovered from under its rubble in November 2023, while the bodies of dozens are still trapped under the rubble.
