The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip said on Thursday that Israeli authorities had reduced the number of patients and wounded individuals permitted to leave the Strip for treatment in Egypt from 136 to 61 patients and their companions.

In a statement, the ministry said: “In a move that demonstrates a blatant disregard for the humanitarian and health situation of patients and the wounded in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation authorities today obstructed the departure of the scheduled group of patients and wounded individuals who are in dire need of specialized and urgent medical care in the Arab Republic of Egypt.”

The ministry explained that the group initially consisted of 136 patients and their companions who had received official travel approvals, before Israeli authorities reduced the number to 72 patients and companions and returned the rest.

It added that despite its protest against the procedure and the commencement of patient departures, the Israeli side requested the return of an additional 11 patients and companions, bringing the final number to 61.

The ministry emphasized that the patients and wounded individuals included in this group require “specialized and urgent medical care” in Egypt.

Consequently, the ministry decided to limit departures to critically ill patients transported by ambulance and to return the remaining patients “as a collective protest” against “unjustified punitive policies.”

The ministry deemed the Israeli measure a “flagrant violation of the right to treatment,” warning that it puts the lives of hundreds of patients at risk of death by denying them timely access to specialized hospitals.

It called on the World Health Organization, the United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, and other relevant international organizations to “intervene immediately and exert direct pressure” on Israeli authorities to halt their “arbitrary conditions.”

It also demanded that the departure of patients be facilitated in accordance with the understandings reached in Sharm el-Sheikh last October.
