I contacted Mr. Hasan Barın, director of Barın Ajans, and told him that I wanted to interview him for an article introducing him to Arab and international readers, as part of my work as a writer and my publications on a number of Arabic- and English-language websites and platforms.

He welcomed the idea, and I asked him to send me a brief account of his journalistic and media journey so that I could prepare the interview questions. But I was surprised when he began sending me messages, one after another, for nearly an hour, telling me about everything from his early childhood in the village to the founding of Barın Ajans.

When I read what he had sent me after translating it into Arabic, I realized that he had shared a complete story with me. I decided to present it here in this form.

Hasan Barın says he attended primary and middle school at the village school in Akçalan, in the Gediz district of Kütahya Province in western Turkey. 

From his early school years, he was passionate about reading and writing. Because his parents worked in İzmir, he lived with his grandparents in the village until he was thirteen.

Whenever his parents visited him during the holidays, he would ask his father to buy him at least ten newspapers, which he would then read from beginning to end.

He still remembers the first book he ever received. It was a gift from his mother’s cousin, whom he used to call “uncle.” He not only gave him the book but also read 24 pages of it to him. The book was titled Ali and Mercan and told the story of the friendship between a child and a donkey.

He later moved to İzmir to live with his family and continue his secondary education. There, his uncle Hasan ran a café known as “Uncle Hasan’s Café.” He used to visit it regularly and spend some time reading newspapers. Sometimes his uncle Hasan would send him to buy newspapers, and he would not return home until he had read them.

He then moved to Denizli, in southwestern Turkey, and enrolled in the Faculty of Education at Pamukkale University. He spent his free time after lectures studying and reading newspapers. He was not the kind of person who regularly spent time in cafés.

One day, however, he noticed a small café where around five newspapers were delivered every day. He began going there to read them.

After telling some of his classmates about the café, they started going with him. As the days passed, their number grew until the café owner finally told them, “From now on, I will not allow you to enter the café.” They later discovered that the café was used for gambling in the evenings.

After graduating from the Faculty of Education, he began working as a teacher. He found his real passion in the classroom, especially when he saw his students interacting with him, understanding the lesson, and taking another step forward in their learning. Even during breaks, he spent time with them, took part in extracurricular activities, played with them, and accompanied them on recreational trips.

While working as a teacher, he enrolled in the Faculty of History at Anadolu University in Eskişehir, in central-western Turkey, and continued his studies alongside his work.

After completing his studies in history, he enrolled in the Faculty of Political Sciences. He is now a fourth-year student in the Department of Public Administration.

He remembers that when he was seven years old, his father once asked him, “What will you become when you grow up?”

He replied, “I will become a journalist, but I will face a lot of trouble.”

And that is what happened. He became a journalist and faced many difficulties. Numerous complaints were filed against him, some of them reaching the highest levels, and he was summoned to give statements. But he says that people trusted him, and as a result, he never faced any punishment.

His writings on Facebook caught the attention of the well-known Azerbaijani journalist Nigar Oğuday Abdullayeva. After they got to know each other, she asked him to write for her newspaper.

He was hesitant and believed that he would not be able to write. This lasted for nearly four months. But Nigar insisted, and eventually he began writing. In a short time, his articles attracted considerable attention.

Some people described his articles as somewhat sharp. After one of his pieces was published, it received a great deal of attention, with more than seventeen thousand readers. The newspaper was later subjected to a cyberattack, followed by other attacks.

What happened was painful for him, especially because he had been preparing to publish a book collecting the articles he had written for the newspaper and for other websites in Turkey and abroad. There were between 800 and 900 articles and columns in total. But he did not give up and continued writing for other newspapers.

Although he does not yet have a book of his own, his articles have appeared in four books. He is currently preparing a book that will bring together a selection of his articles, and he also has an idea for a novel that he says he plans to write.

Hasan Barın emphasizes that meeting Nigar Oğuday Abdullayeva was indeed a turning point in his life and that she played a major role in encouraging him to pursue journalism and writing.

He always tells her, “You managed to make someone as lazy as me work. You made me a journalist and a writer, so I value you and am very proud of you.” He describes her as his teacher and as someone who is like a mother and a sister to him.

He believes that worship is not limited to prayer and fasting, but also includes seeking knowledge, learning, and sharing that knowledge with others. He tries to live according to this belief and says that he will continue on this path for as long as he is alive.

After retiring from teaching, he devoted most of his time to writing newspaper articles. He says he spends around fifteen hours a day writing and working, and even when he is not working, he continues to think and reflect.

He does not like wasting his time on empty things. Instead, he prefers to spend his time writing articles that reach thousands of readers.

One of the things that affected him deeply, and that he says he will remember for the rest of his life, happened when a woman from outside Turkey called him after reading one of his articles. She had been so moved by it that she called him while crying.

He has also received numerous awards, including medals, and has appeared as a speaker on many television programs. He believes that the greatest honor is to have wonderful people in your life and to receive their respect and affection.

Although he is 53 years old, he has made an educational plan for the next seven years and decided what he wants to accomplish during that period. He says that his plan for continuing his education until the age of sixty is already in place.

He believes that a teacher must first be a student and that a teacher should understand that he does not know everything and should know the limits of his own knowledge.

He loves his country and its people deeply, but he often says, “Humanity comes first.” He quotes the Turkish poet and Sufi Yunus Emre, saying, “Love the created for the sake of the Creator.” He says this is his philosophy of life.

When he founded Barın Ajans two years ago, his initial hope was simply to reach 300 or 500 readers a month. He had many journalist friends whom he loved and respected, so he asked them to write for the agency.

After that, many journalists began calling him and sending him their articles. Today, the number of readers has grown to hundreds of thousands from different parts of the world.

He believes that the people who deserve the greatest credit for this success are the writers of Barın Ajans, whose number has now grown to more than one hundred, from different parts of the world, including writers from different religions and backgrounds. He says he is grateful to all of them for their efforts.

He sees Barın Ajans as a family. It is true that he owns it, but he does not see it as belonging to him alone. He believes it also belongs to the journalists and friends who write for it, and to the readers who follow what is published there with enthusiasm.

He sees Barın Ajans as a voice for humanity and for the oppressed. He also says that he works hard and will continue working to help Barın Ajans grow.

In the end, Hasan Barın spoke about talent as something given to a person by God. He believes that a person should make use of that talent and offer something to others through it. What remains in the end, he says, is the mark a person leaves in the hearts and minds of others.
