The accumulation of medical waste in the Gaza Strip poses a growing health and environmental threat. Contaminated syringes, catheters, and bandages are scattered among tents and areas where displaced people are gathered, exposing children and families to serious infectious diseases.
A spokesperson told Al Jazeera Mubasher that cases of children being pricked with used syringes have become commonplace, leading to outbreaks of hepatitis, skin diseases, and respiratory illnesses, amidst the near-total collapse of the healthcare system.
The lack of designated containers and bags for sorting has forced medical staff to mix infectious and non-infectious waste, increasing the risk of infection. Furthermore, the Israeli occupation has destroyed more than 20 vehicles used for transporting medical waste and prevented the entry of spare parts and oils necessary for their maintenance, completely paralyzing the transport of this waste.
Another spokesperson told Al Jazeera Mubasher that the areas designated for medical waste treatment, which were located in the “yellow zone,” have been completely destroyed or are now inaccessible, leaving waste accumulating in healthcare centers and residential areas. The spokesperson also attributes the worsening crisis to the fuel shortage, which is paralyzing the movement of waste transport vehicles and preventing the operation of the treatment plant, at a time when the number of displaced people is increasing at an unprecedented rate.
