The Palestine Center for Prisoner Studies confirmed that the Israeli occupation continues to kill Palestinian prisoners in its jails, despite dozens of prisoners having died over the past three years. The center said in a statement issued today, Monday, that the occupation killed 91 prisoners whose identities have been announced, while the fate of dozens more from the Gaza Strip is being hidden, with some believed to have died during the early months of the war. The center explained that the names and circumstances of the prisoners’ deaths from Gaza fall under the crime of enforced disappearance, amid the ongoing ban on prisoner visits since October 2023, including visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross. It pointed out that this ban has isolated the prisoners from the outside world and prevented knowledge of what is happening inside the prisons, confirming that reports, including Israeli reports, indicate that the number of prisoners killed is higher than the announced figures. The center warned of the continuation of killings inside the prisons, as the causes remain, foremost among them torture, starvation, medical negligence, and the harsh conditions prisoners are forced to live in.
He added that the occupation is holding about 9,500 Palestinian prisoners in harsh and inhumane conditions, including more than a third who are detained without charge, while others are arrested for posts or positions on social media.
He explained that the arrests target anyone who criticizes the occupation’s policies, calls for resistance, or praises martyrs, including women and girls, with some facing prison sentences for years.
The center warned of new prisoner deaths, especially patients suffering from serious illnesses without proper treatment, and elderly people who need special care and proper nutrition.
It pointed out that dozens of prisoners need surgeries that the occupation refuses to perform, while others need prosthetics, wheelchairs, crutches, and assistive devices, with the occupation delaying in providing them, worsening their suffering.
He added that Shin Bet officers use harsh and deadly torture methods in interrogation centers to extract information, and they use medical treatment, food, and sleep to pressure prisoners and push them to confess what the investigators want.
He clarified that those confessions are used to prepare indictments that lead to long prison sentences, while violations against prisoners continue.
The Palestinian Center renewed its call for urgent international intervention to protect prisoners from the risk of death inside prisons, to stop the policies of torture, abuse, and medical neglect, and to make the occupation abide by international law and human rights conventions.
