The Tasnim International News Agency reported that a visual investigation conducted by the British newspaper, the Financial Times, in collaboration with the non-profit Lighthouse Reports Foundation, revealed systematic destruction carried out by the Israeli occupation army in southern Lebanon, encompassing tens of thousands of homes, schools, agricultural lands, and forests.
An analysis of satellite imagery, available data, and documented footage showed that most of the damage occurred after Israeli forces seized control of the evacuated villages in mid-April, rendering vast areas uninhabitable and destroying essential infrastructure for civilian life, from water and energy facilities to medical care. In this context, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director, Christine Beckerle, affirmed that this is “a widespread, long-term, and systematic attack on the people of southern Lebanon,” noting that the leveling of vital infrastructure and healthcare facilities, along with the scorched earth tactics, creates “barren, uninhabitable landscapes, making it extremely difficult for people to return to southern Lebanon.”
Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced weeks after the outbreak of the latest war that the “Rafah and Beit Hanoun model” would be implemented to completely destroy Lebanese border villages. He boasted that by July, all buildings in 24 Lebanese villages, some dating back hundreds of years, had been destroyed, along with up to 20,000 homes.
The investigation revealed that most of the destruction occurred after the initial ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel on April 17. Israeli forces, having already seized control of the abandoned villages, continued to destroy southern Lebanon through airstrikes, controlled explosions, bulldozers, and the use of white phosphorus.
Satellite analysis of the Khiam, Taybeh, Bint Jbeil, and Haddatha areas in southern Lebanon showed that the damage extended to almost entire municipalities. The investigation also documented evidence of bombings and demolitions carried out by heavy machinery and excavators belonging to companies such as Caterpillar and Volvo.
The occupation also inflicted severe damage on historical landmarks and UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as 16th-century mosques, 19th-century libraries, religious shrines, Roman ruins, and Crusader castles. Joan Bejjali of the Baladi Heritage Preservation Organization said, “This is an attempt to render these areas indistinguishable… to sever people’s connection to their land and history.”
A Comprehensive Targeting of Infrastructure and the Health Sector
Lebanese authorities are operating on the assumption that everything below the “yellow line” has been completely destroyed. Demolition methods have been applied on a wide scale, targeting water, energy, roads, schools, agriculture, and healthcare.
The destruction includes at least 2,500 kilometers of water infrastructure, including pipes and wells, as well as solar panels powering water systems. All bridges over the Litani River have been destroyed—only two have been partially repaired.
On the agricultural front, more than 20% of the agricultural land and forests in the south were destroyed, and olive groves, which produce about 40% of the country’s crop, were damaged and require the replanting of tens of thousands of trees.
The Lebanese Ministry of Environment also documented the Israeli occupation’s widespread use of white phosphorus and the spraying of herbicides on more than 2,000 hectares of border land over the past three years, describing it as “environmental genocide.”
In the health sector, dozens of health facilities were destroyed, and the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced the deaths of 135 healthcare workers while performing their duties, as a result of Israeli airstrikes known as “double, triple, and quadruple strikes,” which target the same location minutes or hours later to target paramedics and civilians.
