Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned on Thursday that thousands of people in the Gaza Strip are at grave risk of death and serious illness as Israeli authorities continue to restrict the entry of engine oil and spare parts into the territory.
In a statement, the organization explained that these supplies are essential for operating generators in hospitals, ambulances, water pumps, and water trucks. MSF asserted that obstructing these basic services is clear evidence of Israel’s systematic destruction of the infrastructure in Gaza.
The organization revealed that its stock of engine oil is barely sufficient for one month, and some of its equipment has already been damaged due to the shortages, forcing its teams to search for supplies on the local market at exorbitant prices.
MSF indicated that engine oil supplies have dwindled to levels that have led to a twenty-fold increase in price over the past six months, noting that the price per liter exceeded $1,300 by the end of July, with no guarantees regarding its quality or availability. On August 5, one of the generators at the Doctors Without Borders field hospital in Deir al-Balah broke down, forcing teams, relying on a smaller backup generator, to implement severe electricity rationing.
The organization reported that it could only operate the operating room for the most critical cases, while nursing staff were unable to sterilize essential equipment, and radiology services were suspended. Patients with severe burns suffered in the intense heat and lack of air conditioning.
Felipe Ribeiro, Doctors Without Borders’ program coordinator in Palestine, stated that what is happening in Gaza is not simply a series of isolated incidents related to supply shortages, but rather reflects a deliberate policy of attrition. He emphasized that Israeli policies have been obstructing the entry of supplies for over two years, not only delaying aid but also dismantling the systems upon which the population’s survival depends.
