Mohammed Al-Mekhlafi

Late this afternoon, my friend Fouad Al-Maqtari contacted me and told me that he was with Mr. Saif Al-Dhebyani and Mr. Mohammed Al-Same’i at

a friend’s maqiI, (a qat gathering in Al-Tayramana, a medium-sized room above the top floor).

They welcomed me warmly. Mr. Saif, as always, greeted me with his gentle smile, making you feel surrounded by his warmth, generosity, and kind heart. Mr. Mohammed is also a kind and helpful person. We always call him a man you can count on when it matters. And then there is Fouad Al-Maqtari, a man whose presence gives you the warmth and kindness of a father.

We had a wonderful time. We talked about how things were going in our lives, remembered our days of teaching, and talked about many other things. We also took a few photos to keep as memories.

When I returned home at around 8:30 p.m., I thought I would write a short post about this beautiful gathering of friends.

I started writing, and as you know, sometimes when you begin to write, the words simply start flowing. Before I knew it, I found myself going back to December 2005, to the morning of the first day of my marriage.

I received a call from a friend congratulating me on my marriage. I replied, “May God bless you.” But he congratulated me again, so I jokingly said, “That’s enough.” He laughed and said, “I’m congratulating you on your new job! I’m looking through Al-Thawra newspaper right now, and your name is on the list of those appointed to government positions in Sana’a Governorate.”

I did not fully grasp the news at first. I was overwhelmed with happiness and thanked him warmly. At the time, I was working as a tour guide for Universal Travel and Tourism Company, while also writing for several newspapers, including Al-Thawra, Al-Asboa, Al-Liwa’a, and Akhbar Al-Youm.

I resigned from the company and started teaching English at Baran School in Fardhat Nehm, about 74 kilometers northeast of Sana’a. I would wake up around five in the morning, pray Fajr, and head to Mareb Street. From there, I would take the first car to Fardhat Nehm.

I would arrive before the morning assembly, teach until noon, and then return to Sana’a. I kept doing this for a year.

Later, I met a friend whom I held in great respect and appreciation. He was a government official with considerable influence and standing. He asked me where I worked, and I told him, “I’m a teacher in Nehem.” He said, “That’s far and exhausting,” and suggested transferring me to Al-Thawra School in Haddah. That is exactly what happened, and I was transferred there in 2007.

I remember my first day at the school. I arrived during the break, greeted the teachers, and asked them where the principal was. At the time, the principal was the respected Mr. Fadhl Al-Qershi, who was sitting with them. I introduced myself and handed him my transfer letter. He welcomed me and introduced me to the other teachers: Mr. Saif Al-Dhebyani, Fouad Al-Maqtari, Ahmed Thua’il, Yahya Doman, Essa Al-Qadeh, Fahem Al-Absi, Abdullah Al-Hawani, and others.

Those were some of the best days. I would wake up early, head to school, and teach until noon. Then I would go to MALI institute and teach there until 8:30 in the evening.

Life was good and comfortable, and our salaries were decent. From time to time, we would take our students on trips to the countryside around Sana’a. We also attended teacher-training courses organized by the British Council. I benefited greatly from those courses, and they helped me improve and develop my teaching skills.

I continued this way until 2014. Then the situation began to deteriorate, followed by the war in 2015. After that, I moved to another educational center.

We continued to meet with our colleagues, but in recent years, things became much worse, and our gatherings became rare. The number of colleagues we could still meet also grew smaller. In the end, only Mr. Saif Al-Dhebyani, Mohammed Al-Same’i, and Fouad Al-Maqtari remained.

I remember that the last time I saw them was about two years ago. Today, we met again and brought all those memories back to life.

I was very happy to see them, even though before I came, I had been exhausted and lying in bed. Some meetings really do happen by chance, but they can awaken beautiful memories inside us.
