Killing people was not the sole objective of the war on Gaza; killing them away from the cameras and outside the realm of public narrative was an equally important goal for the Israeli occupation army throughout nearly three years of its genocidal war.

The strikes targeted everything that could convey what was happening, whether it be television channels, radio stations, newspapers, or production companies, extending even to journalists and activists who carried their phones and cameras in an attempt to keep Gaza visible.

Therefore, local media was one of the battlefields that suffered—according to the Government Media Office in Gaza—a structural annihilation that targeted the entire system, including its human, institutional, and technological components. According to figures revealed by the director of the Government Media Office, Ismail al-Thawabta, to Al Jazeera Net, 16 satellite channel headquarters, 11 radio stations, 12 newspaper and magazine offices, 23 digital media outlets, 27 printing presses, and 5 union and human rights organizations concerned with press freedom were damaged or destroyed. The targeting didn’t stop at media offices; it extended to the homes of journalists and their families. Fifty-three journalists’ homes were destroyed, and 32 families of journalists were completely erased from the civil registry.

But these numbers don’t fully capture the scale of the loss. According to Mohsen Al-Afranji, an assistant professor of media at Qatar University, what happened represented “the biggest act of aggression against a local media system in modern times,” because destroying institutions means dismantling an entire system of newsrooms, personnel, expertise, archives, and communication networks.

Al-Thawabta estimates that the media sector’s losses reached approximately one billion dollars, including headquarters, equipment, broadcast vehicles, and technical devices.
