The fuel shortage in the Gaza Strip is no longer just threatening residents’ access to electricity; it has also forced vital sectors to resort to rudimentary and expensive alternatives. Some of these alternatives have turned the operation of generators and bakeries into a fraught task fraught with breakdowns and toxic fumes, given the difficulty of importing fuel and spare parts.

The reality of commercial generators, gas stations, and bakeries reveals the extent of the repercussions caused by the fuel shortage. Machines that used to take minutes to repair before the war now require hours of work, while spare parts, oils, and filters have become among the most difficult to obtain.

In a report by Al Jazeera Mubasher, an official responsible for operating generators that supply several areas in the central governorate stated that the station distributes electricity to the areas of Nuseirat, Bureij, Maghazi, Deir al-Balah, and Zawayda (in the central Gaza Strip). However, the lack of spare parts has made repairing equipment more difficult and expensive than it was before the war.

He explains that the cost of repairing a single generator has increased tenfold compared to before October 7, 2023, at a time when new generators, oils, and maintenance supplies are scarce, forcing workers to exert double the effort to keep the generators operational.

Black oil stains on the hands of workers as they inspect the generators and connections are a stark illustration of the manual labor necessitated by the lack of readily available equipment and spare parts. The official says they are working around the clock to try to provide electricity amidst a shortage that has persisted for two years.

The challenges aren’t limited to generators; those in charge have been forced to produce an alternative fuel locally, known as “industrial diesel,” from raw materials that are burned and then reprocessed for use. The official describes the process as arduous and dangerous due to the fumes produced during combustion.

The official asserts that using natural diesel would have greatly reduced breakdowns, improved service, and lowered electricity costs for residents, noting that repairing a part that used to take about 10 minutes before the war now takes nearly 4 hours of continuous work.
