More than 35,000 Palestinian refugee students in Lebanon returned to UNRWA schools for the start of the 2026-2027 academic year. However, this return to school came with added economic and educational burdens, imposed by rising prices, transportation costs, and the winter season, in addition to school closures and the transfer of students to other schools.
UNRWA stated that attendance on the first day of the school year exceeded 93.5%, noting that its schools had begun distributing books and stationery to all grades, as well as school bags to students from grades one through nine.
However, these figures alone do not reflect the extent of the difficulties faced by Palestinian families. The start of the school year coincides with increasing living expenses, including securing stationery, clothing, transportation, and tuition fees, in addition to preparing for winter and securing heating oil and food supplies. This has led some families to reuse school supplies from previous years.
In the Galilee camp in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, the economic pressures are evident in the details of preparations for the school year.
Palestinian refugee Hussam Juha, a father of three students, said his family began the school year under difficult economic circumstances, especially with the rising prices of gasoline and diesel fuel and the approaching winter.
Juha explained that his family is relying on supplies his children used last year, some of which are two years old, while they wait to see what the school will provide and what they will still have to buy.
He added that the family will work to gradually acquire the missing items according to their financial means, given that school expenses coincide with the costs of diesel fuel, food supplies, and other household necessities.
Juha called on UNRWA00 to help students obtain stationery, bags, and uniforms, stressing that many families will not be able to cover these expenses combined with the current prices.
