A new UN report has warned of continued Israeli settlement expansion, escalating violence, and the displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank, stressing that these developments undermine the prospects for a two-state solution.
The Acting Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Ramiz Alekperov, briefed the Security Council today on the significant increase in settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory during the reporting period, from June 13 to September 18. He reiterated Security Council Resolution 2334, which requires Israel to immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.
The UN official explained that Israeli planning authorities advanced or approved plans for approximately 4,570 housing units in Area C of the West Bank and 3,515 units in East Jerusalem during the reporting period. The Israeli Ministry of Housing also issued tenders for approximately 2,240 housing units in Area C, including 1,234 units in the E1 area near Jerusalem. Meanwhile, the demolition and confiscation of Palestinian buildings continues.
Regarding violence, the report stated that the UN documented 630 attacks by settlers during the reporting period, resulting in the deaths of 11 Palestinians, injuries to 430 others, and the displacement of 343 Palestinians from 17 communities.
In the Gaza Strip, the report stated that the ceasefire remained extremely fragile, with Israeli military operations continuing west of the so-called “Yellow Line,” including gunfire, shelling, and airstrikes in densely populated areas.
