The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Tunisia hosted, on Thursday evening, October 1, 2026, a distinguished reception marking the 66th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, in the presence of diplomats, officials and media representatives, in an atmosphere marked by warm hospitality, graciousness and the spirit of friendship that unites the Nigerian and Tunisian peoples.

The celebration was presided over by H.E. Dr. Kolo Haruna Abubakar, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Tunisia, and brought together a number of Their Excellencies, ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Tunisia, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, Tunisian personalities, prominent journalists and representatives of various media outlets.

The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Riadh Chaoued, Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, representing the Tunisian government, as well as members of the Nigerian community residing in Tunisia, including students, professionals and businesspeople, reflecting the vitality of the human and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Tunisia.

Celebrating Independence and Honoring a Nation’s Journey

In her address, Ambassador Dr. Kolo Haruna Abubakar stressed that the 66th anniversary of independence represents an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey as a sovereign nation, honor the sacrifices of its founding fathers and renew the country’s commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous and united nation.

She noted that despite the political and economic challenges Nigeria has faced since independence, the country has continued its journey with resilience, unity and determination, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to promote peace and security, modernize its economy and strengthen democratic institutions.

The “Renewed Hope Agenda”: Reform and Economic Transformation

The Ambassador also highlighted the economic reform process pursued by Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, within the framework of the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

She pointed to efforts aimed at achieving economic stability, developing infrastructure and the energy sector, strengthening food security and agriculture, while supporting innovation, technology and the digital economy.

She further highlighted the pillars of Nigeria’s foreign policy — democracy, development and demography — as key foundations through which Nigeria seeks to strengthen its presence and partnerships at both the African and international levels.

Tunisia and Nigeria: A Shared Commitment to Deepening Cooperation

Ambassador Abubakar emphasized that Tunisian-Nigerian relations are founded on solid principles of mutual respect, shared African values and friendship, expressing Nigeria’s commitment to further expanding areas of cooperation with Tunisia.

In this context, she highlighted opportunities in higher education and scientific research, trade and investment, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and green technology, as well as cooperation in the fields of security and regional stability.

She also stressed the importance of developing direct links between business communities in both countries and making greater use of the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with a view to strengthening economic integration between Nigeria and Tunisia.

The Nigerian Community: Human Bridges Between the Two Countries

The Ambassador devoted part of her address to recognizing the Nigerian community in Tunisia, emphasizing that Nigerian students, professionals, entrepreneurs and families constitute an important bridge between the two countries.

She praised the community’s contributions through its skills, cultural exchanges and participation in Tunisia’s economic and social life, reaffirming the Embassy’s commitment to continuing to serve members of the Nigerian community, protect their interests and strengthen their ties with their homeland.

A Celebration with a Distinctly Nigerian Spirit

Beyond the official speeches, the celebration was characterized by a warm and friendly atmosphere reflecting the spirit of the national occasion. Ambassadors, diplomats, journalists and guests exchanged congratulations in an atmosphere of openness and cordial interaction.

The evening was marked by warm hospitality and generosity, reflecting the human and cultural ties that the Nigerian Embassy continues to foster in Tunisia.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the ceremonial cutting of the “Khobzet Gatoua”, which brought guests together in a symbolic and festive moment, adding a distinctive touch of warmth and authenticity to the occasion while reflecting an element of Nigerian national celebration traditions.

The event concluded with a renewed affirmation of the depth of the friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Tunisia, as well as the two countries’ shared aspiration for a new phase of partnership that serves the interests of both peoples and strengthens African cooperation.

From Tunis, the celebration conveyed a clear message: the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the Tunisian and Nigerian peoples continue to grow stronger, while the future holds broader horizons for a partnership built on friendship, mutual respect and shared African values.
