Tunisia hosted the International Halal Forum on 28 and 29 September 2026, presented as Africa’s first international forum of its kind, bringing together officials, experts, investors and key stakeholders from across the halal economy, including food industries, trade, certification, compliance and innovation.
H.E. Lindiwe Hendricks, Ambassador of South Africa to Tunisia, was among the prominent attendees, accompanied by Ms Dimakatso Radebe, First Secretary for Political Affairs, Mr Slim Turki, Trade and Information Officer, and Mr Dumo Siyotula of the South African Embassy.
Held at the CEPEX Export Promotion Centre in Tunis, the forum provided a platform for dialogue on developing the halal market, facilitating market access, strengthening standards and certification and compliance mechanisms, as well as exploring investment opportunities and cross-border trade.
South Africa was represented by a delegation from the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and its MJC Halaal Trust, including Mr MI Salmaan Abrahams, First Deputy President of the MJC and member of the MJC Halaal Trust; Sh. Shahied Essau, Chairman of the MJC Halaal Trust; MI Siraaj Girie, member of the Fatwa Committee, Systems Coordination and Board Member of the MJC Halaal Trust; Mr Faizel Sayed, TV talk-show host, rights activist, Secretary of the MJC Burial Administration and Chairman of the Muslim Cemetery Board; and MI Zakarriya Philander, Acting CEO of the MJC Halaal Trust.
South Africa’s presence in Tunisia continued with a courtesy call by a delegation from the Muslim Judicial Council on Ambassador Lindiwe Hendricks on 30 September, as part of efforts to strengthen communication and cooperation in the halal sector and explore its future prospects.
The forum positions Tunisia as a strategic bridge connecting African markets with those of Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and Oceania, at a time when the halal economy is experiencing growing expansion and diversification across a wide range of sectors.
The forum was organised under the patronage of the Republic of Tunisia, the Ministry of Trade and Export Development, CEPEX, and the FIBGN Global Business Network, highlighting Tunisia’s efforts to strengthen its position within the global halal economy and create new opportunities for partnerships, investment and international trade.
