Before the Palestinian child, Naim Sobh, learned to walk, he learned the meaning of displacement, and before his brother Saddam uttered his first words, his early memory was associated with the sounds of planes and explosions. Saddam was born only two months before the war on Gaza, while his mother, Dima Sobh, carried his brother Naim, during which he was born 13 months ago, to become two young witnesses to a war that has been going on for 1,000 days, during which details were formed. Their first childhood between hunger, fear and displacement. They represent the case of thousands of children who were born during the war or lived the beginnings of their first lives under which, as their stories share the conditions of displacement, hunger and fear. Their mother, Dima, relives the details of the 1,000 days, and says – to Al Jazeera Net – that the war not only stole the childhood of her two sons, but also accompanied them from the first moment. Dima says that the suffering of her son, Naim, started before his birth, as she spent months of pregnancy in severe displacement conditions, during which she suffered hunger and lack of food, and was unable to obtain the minimum level of health care. When she went into labor, she did not find an ambulance or transportation to take her to the hospital, so she put her baby inside the tent. After giving birth, the family faced a new battle. With great difficulty, she was able to find a cart-drawn cart to transport the mother and her baby to the hospital, where Naim weighed only 1,500 grams, which necessitated his entry into the nursery for 4 days to receive the necessary care. The suffering did not end there, as the family faced a crisis in providing formula milk and the necessary food for the nursing mother. Dima believes that these conditions have had clear effects on the growth of Naim, who is today 13 months old, but is still unable to walk, and has only grown years in the lower jaw, at a time when he was supposed to have crossed more stages of his physical development.

Mental health consultant Dr. Osama Emad warns of the significant negative impacts on the physical, psychological, and social development of children born or raised in war zones, where they find themselves surrounded by rubble, death, the sounds of missiles, and displacement.

Children are deprived of all their basic rights, including the right to play, education, healthcare, skills development, and even the right to be with one or both parents. Emad explains that malnutrition, whether during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or after birth, has harmful and lasting effects on a child’s future personality, physical health, and development. Furthermore, deprivation of proper nutrition can lead to physical complications such as weakness, severe fractures, hair loss, skin ulcers, and general weakness.

The psychologist also notes that the psychological trauma resulting from war, and comparing oneself to other children living normal lives, can lead to a loss of self-confidence and an inability to communicate with others due to feelings of inadequacy.
