More than a thousand days after the start of Israel’s war of annihilation in the Gaza Strip, people with disabilities are facing one of the most severe humanitarian and living crises in the Strip’s history. The health, social, and economic systems they rely on to meet their basic needs have almost completely collapsed. Between the loss of income, the disruption of rehabilitation and care services, and the soaring prices of medicines and assistive devices, this group struggles daily for survival. Meanwhile, the circle of disability widens as thousands of injuries are recorded, some of which may result in permanent disabilities. Field data indicates that people with disabilities and their families are experiencing a crippling economic crisis due to the loss of income, high unemployment and poverty rates, rampant inflation, and the continuous rise in the prices of food and medical supplies. Hundreds of families are now unable to afford assistive devices, eyeglasses, medications, and other basic necessities, as humanitarian aid is limited and insufficient to cover even the minimum requirements of this group. The crisis is further compounded by the emergence of thousands of new injuries resulting in permanent or long-term disabilities, at a time when the health system lacks adequate programs for physical rehabilitation, psychological support, and economic assistance.
The CEO of the Gaza Forum for the Visually Impaired, Ali Ta’ima, said that the war deepened the economic crisis experienced by people with disabilities. He added that economic activities, the destruction of facilities, and the lack of job opportunities made this group among the most affected, especially since their employment opportunities before the war were limited and mostly depended on simple jobs or unstable sources of income.
